点评:You can’t miss this 400 year old yarn market if you pass through Dunster. It’s smack-bang in the middle of the main street. You actually have to drive around it.
However the yarn market is worth a closer look and it is well worth stopping to explore the village of Dunster as well. We parked at the nearby Exmoor Information Centre and walked into the village.
The yarn market was out first stop. What you see here is a large, wooden, 17th century octagonal hall. It’s free to enter and you can walk through it. This is where cloth was bought and sold. It was mainly woollen cloth which had been woven in the nearby mills and having a roofed market hall would have protected the material from the rain and weather. Gable windows over each of the 8 sides made the inside a Biot lighter and brighter so that the merchants could more easily pick over the cloth and check out the quality.
If you are interested in the history of the yarn market and Dunster's wool trade, there is some information inside the museum ( it's only a few doors down). You can also see a matchstick model of the market here.
