Sombre reflection on the wartime history of Okinawa, vast greenery
Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum的点评
点评:We made an impromptu stop here on our road trip due to rainy weather. The rolling hill and vast greenery of the surrounding Peace Memorial Park would be lovely for walking around to enjoy the scenery while reflecting after visiting the museum.
The ticket price is very affordable - 300 yen for adults, and lower for students and children.
The main exhibition (2nd floor) is very extensive. I would recommend dedicating a 1-2 hour duration to look through the material in detail. There is wording in English which is sufficient to follow the historical events.
Word of caution, the exhibition material is very heavy on the atrocities of war, and human suffering. It felt quite scary with the descriptions, photographs including severely wounded children and the environmental set-up to simulate the ambience of the the "Typhoon of Steel"
- may not be suitable for the faint-hearted, or for young children to visit the main exhibition, as there is no exit mid-way (Room 3 Battleground of Hell) if you are starting to feel upset and scared and need to take a break
There is a children-specific exhibition on the ground floor, may be better for children to stick to that age-appropriate material.
