No access to small ruin
Greenan Castle的点评
点评：This small castle ruin is best viewed as part of a walk rather than a destination. There is not much of the castle remaining, and that which does, is perched at the edge of a cliff with a large drop to the sea below. The entrance has been bricked-up to deter access although there are signs of previous visitors to the interior in the form of graffiti and the remnants of a “carry-out” including beer cans and an empty bottle of Buckfast. Not history at its best.
We parked in the sizeable car park by the coast just off Greenan Road and walked along the dunes to the base of the cliffs where you can look up to view the castle from below. As far as we could make out there is no access to the castle from this direction and from that point of view its defences were well planned.
We doubled back, eventually following rough tracks to join up with the cycle path which runs parallel with Greenan Road. If you want to visit the exterior of the castle close-up it would be best to park alongside the cycle path in the first place and head uphill past Ardoch Cottage. There is a track heading off the cycle route to the right just beyond the height restriction barrier but it’s not easy to see. We only returned this way having earlier detoured up the cycle path, across the edge of a ploughed field, in between going up and down a ditch or two, to eventually reach the castle ruin. The route is not marked and crosses rough ground so thankfully we were wearing hiking boots. As mentioned we couldn’t access the ruin so after a brief look at the remnants we returned the more obvious track edging the fields and cliffs until we came to the hidden cycle path access.
The castle is located on the Ayrshire Coastal Path route details of which are online. I don’t think the castle is a highlight, more a landmark.
