Fun day out on the via verde
Via Verde de la Sierra的点评
点评：We had a wonderful day on the via verde riding from Olvera to Coripe. It is a track with light gravel that runs amongst the olive groves. You certainly get away from civilisation - other than the olive groves you ride through a remote valley with almost no houses and no roads. There is no water apart from at the estacion buildings or the cantina (see below).
You ride through many tunnels that cut through the hillsides. We enjoyed this part of it. It does get quite dark but we were fine relying on the lights in the longer tunnels.
The most beautiful part was the Zaframagon which is overlooked by spectacular cliffs and a colony of soaring vultures. We stopped at the astronomy cantina at Zaframagon which serves coffee/beer/juice and some cakes (but not food for lunch). It's only open Sat/Sun/holidays. It would be lovely to spend more time here looking for wildlife or stars!
There were also cafes in the station buildings of both Olvera and Coripe which looked nice, but we didn't go in to them.
We hired bikes in Olvera. The adult bikes were in very good condition, though the gear change was stiff on the smaller (20" child bikes). I imagine the child bikes are used less. The nice man at the rental place also gave us a way to tow the child bike using an inner tube which we ended up not using.
We decided to ride to Coripe and get a taxi van back to Olvera. Although these places are only 18km by bike it is a slow drive of more than 40 km by many winding roads! This taxi cost 70 euros and I'd recommend calling them ahead to arrange pick-up. We got picked up at Estacion Coripe so we didn't have to climb up to Coripe itself.
If you want an easy ride that returns to your start point I'd probably recommend starting at Coripe and riding uphill towards Olvera so that you have a downhill return. The steepest part (though never very steep as it is still a train line) is the last stretch to Olvera.
