Fantastic personal tour with an excellent and experienced guide

点评：We've been to a lot of house tours. This is easily one of the best. And it's free, funded mostly by grants!
Because the furnishings are all from the 1890-1920 period, and seem to be, the house gives the appearance of being one I could have lived in at the time. One of the few I've seen designed for the dining room to directly access every other room of the first floor. Of course, in 1890, the views of the river had to be spectacular.
The guide, Natalie, was excellent. Said she's been there 17 years and her expertise on some of the questions the two of us asked proved her knowledge. During the entire tour, she gave the two of us the impression of just having a conversation with us about what we were seeing. When we walked up, she came out to greet us and the easy conversation started on the porch and continued through to the end in the kitchen.
Someone else mentioned the Edison beeswax player and that alone was almost worth the donation I left. I've heard of those and to see and hear one live and to be able to record it, was an amazing plus to the house.
If you're looking for turn of the 20th century gardening, that's not their forte. The shade garden it what it is and the area behind the house is relatively uneventful. It's an urban-situated house. I didn't expect landscaping.
I have no idea how long we were there. Natalie gave us no indication that her time was short or even measured and, because of the nature of the tour, ours wasn't either.
There aren't a ton of things to do in Groton outside of the sub base. But this should be on everyone's list.
