A moving memorial to the fight for democracy and freedom against Portugal's dictatorship.
Museu do Aljube - Resistência e Liberdade的点评
点评:The Museum of Aljube Resistance and Freedom is dedicated to honouring those who fought against the dictatorial regime that ruled Portugal from 1926 to 1974. Located in a former prison that used to house political prisoners, the inscription on the outside of the building states the following:
"Here
from the silence of the "drawers"
of the homeland gnawed
of the breasts broken by the tortures of the request
rose the cry of freedom
flowered April"
The reference to April above is meant to signify the carnation revolution of April 1974, which began as a military coup against the Estado Novo (New State) dictatorship, but over the next year or so led to a democratic political system.
Serving both as a site of memory and a historical museum, this museum contains a lot of factual information about the struggle for freedom and democracy and it also uses, videos, photos, and testimonies to good effect. I wouldn't call my visit to this site enjoyable as that's the wrong word, but I would certainly call it educational and I would definitely go back.
