点评：We visited Église Saint-Côme-et-Saint-Damien during the 80th anniversary of D-Day, and it turned out to be one of the most moving stops of our entire trip. We were able to walk over from our lovely and historic B&B, La Ferme Delaunay (highly recommend), which made the experience feel even more personal.
This small, unassuming church holds a remarkable story. On June 5, 1944, Robert E. Wright, a 20-year-old medic from the 101st, landed miles off course in the middle of the Normandy countryside. Spotting the church tower in the distance, he made his way there and—alongside another medic, Kenneth J. Moore, established a field hospital, fixing the red cross flag to the church. Together, they treated American and German soldiers, using the pews as makeshift hospital beds.
The church took considerable damage from shelling during the war, but has since been thoughtfully restored. Today, the church honors the 101st Airborne with four beautiful stained glass windows. Robert E. Wright is also buried here, and you can visit his tombstone behind the church.
It’s hard to put into words how moving it is to stand in such a quiet, and still largely undeveloped location, imagining the bravery of those young soldiers. If you’re anywhere nearby, it’s absolutely worth a visit to pause, reflect, and remember.
Parking is available behind the church and along the street. No entrance fee but a donation box inside the church welcomes contributions to support ongoing preservation.
