点评:Oh my. This is a small, three room museum (one of the rooms is the county gift shop though), but goodness is it well curated. I spent 40 minutes in the main room! The fossils, USS Tappahannock exhibit, the steamboat information, the Civil War display and fort model, the history of county... whoever has created these exhibits has uncommon talent. They have made a lot out of this space. And, to my absolute delight, most of the displays were heavily reliant on primary artifacts. That's what I love to see! If I want to read signage I can do that online. Museums are for learning through presentation of THINGS and STUFF. It makes history real. And the Essex County museum does exactly that. Make sure to take a few minutes to examine the old tombstones in the adjacent graveyard, and walk the block - the nearby Courthouse, Civil War Memorial, USS Tappahannock Memorial, Debtor's Prison, and several historic houses are all neat. The architecture is VERY old on some of them - the Debtor's Jail dates to the 1700s! Using the museum as a starting point, a simple walk around the block catches all of those sights. And I found it useful to keep in mind that these very streets, and some of the buildings, were witness to the British invasion of Tappahannock in the War of 1812. Just a fascinating historical area, spearheaded by this marvelous little museum (which is free to visit). If you're anywhere nearby, take an hour to check it out.
