Two kinds of freedom — and an hour across open water to find them

点评：We came to Christiansø expecting a quiet island. What we found
was a quiet society — and it made us think differently about
our own lives.
Ella noticed the stillness first. No cars. No urgency. Around
100 people who have chosen — or been born into — a life where
the outside world barely reaches. Children grow up knowing
everyone. They learn tolerance because they have no other choice.
Erik noticed the practical reality: everyone holds several jobs.
The doctor brews beer. The carpenter teaches school. The island
runs on people who decided that enough is enough.
Back in Gudhjem that evening, we felt the contrast immediately —
the impulse to go anywhere, eat anything, do whatever we wanted.
Freedom looks very different depending on which side of the water
you are standing on.
Ferry from Gudhjem: 260 kr. return per adult (320 kr. high season).
Crossing takes about an hour — seas can be rough, come prepared.
Allow a full day. We would return and stay overnight next time.
