A Must-Do Experience while in Yurok Country around Klamath, CA

点评：This is a must-do experience when you are in Northern Humboldt! The tour starts by checking in at the Yurok Country Visitor Center, which has informative displays about the tribe's culture and history. Then you drive about 5 minutes to the Klamath River where there is a boat landing in a lovely setting. The canoe is an authentic tribal dugout canoe made from a redwood that has been hand-carved. The cultural significance of the canoe is explained and then you are then seated on hand-made authentic stools in the canoe. The two Yurok guides will take you up and down river, all the while talking about the tribe's culture, the importance of the river to them and answering questions about their history, spiritual beliefs and current way of life. We saw egrets, blue herons and many other birds around the river, and the guides also pointed out important plants used in the Yurok culture. It was very relaxing, the stools were comfortable (although a person could sit on the bottom of the canoe if need be) and we returned to shore much more informed about the Yurok people and culture. This is an awesome way to deeply experience a place by getting to know about the first people here who have sustainably stewarded this magical redwood and river area from time immemorial to the present.
