点评:Hawaii Volcanoes NP has something for all your senses. Not only can you see, hear and feel Kilauea, on this trail, you can smell it. Between the Visitor Center and the crater viewing area, there is a 0.8-mile trail that takes you through the Sulphur Banks and steam vents where the heat of Kilauea releases gases of mist and smells.
This is a good hike that exposes you to an interesting volcanic feature. However, if you have visited Lassen Volcanic NP, as we did in September, the smell here is much less noxious. As I overheard a guide talking, Hawaii Volcanoes Sulphur smells more like the smell after a match is lit than the Sulphur of rotten eggs. While the smell here is much better than the smells of Lassen, it is a unique experience to see and smell the steam oozing from cracks in the earth along this trail. One of the other interesting sights here is the very yellow coloration around the vent holes. You can actually see the accumulation of Sulphur as it passes through the ground. It is an interesting reminder that volcanoes are natural phenomenon for all the senses.
