点评：On June 24th, 2024, during our stay in Edinburgh, we took a trip to North Berwick to join the Sula boat trip to the famous Bass Rock. This trip was an amazing way to see the Bass Rock up close, where around 150,000 gannets nest each year.
Our journey began by sailing towards Craigleith, a smaller rock island near Bass Rock. On the rocks of Craigleith, we spotted a seal resting peacefully, which was a delightful sight. The cruise continued towards Bass Rock, giving us incredible views of the large gannet colony. The birds, with their white feathers, made the rock look almost white from a distance. We also saw cormorants and guillemots sitting on the narrow ledges of the cliffs.
The trip lasted 1.5 hours and included a guide who shared interesting facts about the birds and the history of the area. Despite the weather not being perfect, we enjoyed the trip. The boat was quite crowded, which made it hard to move around and see the birds from different sides. However, the crew managed this by allowing small groups of ten people to go up to a special viewing platform for a few minutes, providing a better view.
Tickets cost £28 per person, and it was definitely worth it to see these beautiful birds in their natural environment. The trip also included a bit of history about Bass Rock, once a place for a hermit saint around 600 AD, and later a strategic fortress and a prison during different historical periods. The lighthouse on the island, built in 1902, still stands as a guide for sailors.
Overall, this trip to Bass Rock and Craigleith was an unforgettable experience, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in nature and history.
