点评：I have always had a keen interest in railways so i was quite excited to receive tickets for the Dalesman for a recent birthday. It’s an early start from Chester at 07.30 which wasn’t a problem with a premier inn just 5 mins walk away. First impressions were good, the train was clean, we were in First class and had a welcome pack booklet & timetable. The staff are very friendly and we pulled away by Diesel as arranged to be changed for a steam engine at Hellifield. About an hour into our journey it was announced that the steam engine had a technical issue so we would be diesel hauled all day, apparently it was a problem with the retrofitted electrical systems required by Network Rail. This was very disappointing but I suppose you have to accept this when working with very old technology. The main issue we had with the day was the journey itself, it is a long day with nearly 10 hours in your seat and with the BR Mk2 coaches the windows do not open and there was no forced ventilation or air conditioning even though they were equipped originally. The route outbound is very picturesque up the Settle & Carlisle line, then after a couple of hours in Carlisle then inbound is down the west coast main line which was quite uncomfortable, the weather was very hot so the coach was stuffy and to top it all we had to wait at Carnforth for nearly an hour which was very unpleasant. At over £400 a couple with no food we won’t be doing it again as looking back there no real highlights. It’s a shame as the volunteers work really hard and do their best.
