点评：My wife booked this as we really wanted to do a steam journey and thought why not turn it into a great experience so booked the premier dining. A week before our journey we received an email informing us that because of the banning of steam trains due to a fire risk to the fields being dry because of the hot weather our steam train will now be a diesel. Disappointed that, that was the case we were still looking forward to the journey. On the day we dressed for the occasion and got to the train early with plenty of time for our trip. The first disappointment was the carriage it was just a first class carriage there was no lamp on the table as advertised and no champagne flutes it was just basic. Set off on time and coffees and teas were served, then at 08:10 the man serving the coffee said no more teas or coffee for an hour as we are short staffed today. Another disappointment. At 9ish we were served a little orange juice in our little glass and the man shouted to all don’t worry the fizz will come shortly, then once everyone had their orange juice it was topped up with champagne. Unfortunately not in champagne flutes. We both opted for a melon starter which was nice and smoked Scottish salmon for breakfast. The salmon was lovely but the toast was burnt and I mean really burnt I don’t know why that would be served to anyone. Then the toast and croissants came round on a tray we pointed out the toast was burnt so the person serving said do you want another toast, when we said yes she looked for two unburnt toast in the tray. This was difficult as most of the toast was burnt. Once she found some we then had to transfer our scrambled egg and salmon on to the new toast, we were not offered a croissant as I think we had our ration by having the extra toast to replace the burnt toast. The cutlery needs changing, it must be as old as the train, the knives were blunt making it difficult to cut the toast. Coffees and teas were back on the menu. The scenery is great but you don’t really get to see the viaduct from the train and the windows don’t open and anyway if they did you can’t put your head or your camera out of the windows for health and safety reasons. They keep drumming this into you as it announced several times. You are given a timetable of the stations you stop at and pass through there is a 40minute stop at Hellifield to change engines from a diesel to the steam train but reading the other reviews it looks like this is rare. I suppose it makes sense to just leave a diesel with a full tank of fuel on the carriages rather than change it to a steam train that someone has to keep firing the engine but as I had previously stated steam trains were banned for us. Apparently due to train scheduling the train again has to stop at Hellifield station for 40minutes on the journey back even if there is no train change over. You have to order any other drinks you want with your dinner on the journey back apparently so they can be chilled . On reaching Carlisle you disembark and have over two hours to look around. On the journey back our drinks were on the table in a ice bucket. We were also served a glass of champagne each. The food is served not long after leaving Carlisle, the food was just as bad, the vegetables were over cooked. I don’t know how you can get broccoli soggy and burnt. I suppose you boil it and then put them in the oven for an extended period of time. If I was in a proper restaurant I would of sent the lot back. For the money it cost I would expect better it certainly wasn’t premier dining more of a works canteen meal that had been overcooked and kept warm for hours. The cheesecake was about the best thing to eat. Then the cheese was served, the waiter brought them over , the cheese came on a large plate and you could choose what you wanted but bear in mind you only get two crackers. Once the food is served it’s a long journey back with no refreshments unless you go and buy them yourselves. But beware the large bottle of water I brought for £4 was warm. I was also overcharged £7 for a drink I didn’t have but when challenged I was refunded. Our overall experience was disappointing it’s a lot of money to pay for what you get. I feel we were sold a lie.
