点评:One of Mons’ most notable sites, the grand belfry sits just SW of the main square. The ticket office is annoyingly in a separate building below and to one side. You then need to walk up to the tower itself (not brilliantly signposted). Once in there is a lift up to the 5th floor, from which solid stairs take you up to the magnificent carillon on the 7th floor. This rings out every 15 minutes.
For some reason the way down is “only” by stairs all the way back to the bottom, including one section of very tight and steep stone spiral. Goodness knows why you can’t use the lift.
Unfortunately there is no viewing platform so you are limited to peering through 4 windows on the 5th floor, and much of these are blocked by large display screens. So I felt they missed an important trick here. However, it is worth going for the history and to see the interior structures and carillon.
Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month.
