点评:We just completed a Kilimanjaro climb (3 of us) and safari (2 of the original 3) with African Scenic Safaris and I can't say enough good things about this outfit. My friend picked the company after doing a lot of research and even emailing with the author of a Kilimanjaro travel guide for his input, and I could not have been more pleased with how it all turned out.
Trip planning: For the better part of a year, Hanson in the main office politely answered all our questions, helped us make all our arrangements, and provided us with detailed packing lists.
Kilimanjaro: I had trekked internationally before in Peru and Patagonia so I thought I would know what to expect, but I was wrong. From start to finish, the staff at African Scenic Safaris blew me away with all the professionalism and care they put into ensuring a safe journey up and down the mountain. The day before our climb, we received a detailed briefing from, and underwent a gear check with, the lead guide Joel. I had never had either a briefing or gear check on my previous treks even though Peru involved a very rapid ascent from 11k to over 15k feet in a single day, which is nowhere near as high as Kili but still a significant altitude. Literally the only thing anyone cared about with respect to my gear there was that it was within the weight limit and anyone who felt sick was just given coca leaves to chew or told to ride the emergency donkey. Not so with African Scenic Safaris; Joel reviewed with us what we could expect and would need and inspected all the key pieces of gear we would use, including our boots and the various warm layers and accessories we would need for summit night to make sure they were sufficient. We all remarked that we had used pretty much every single thing on the 3 page long packing list! We also knew there was oxygen on hand, although none of us needed to resort to that.
The attention to detail continued with the climb itself with every day meticulously planned out by Joel in consultation with us (and based on the vitals he took daily) to get us from camp to camp in the most efficient and safe manner so we could acclimate and get adequate rest before trying to summit. Our assistant guide Hiari was also extremely qualified and knowledgeable about the history and topography of the mountain, in addition to being the best cheerleader and caregiver one could ask for -- he even wiped my runny nose for me without being asked when I was unable to get my own kleenex out of my pocket because of the thick mitts I was wearing! The cook Lazaro worked wonders to prepare 3 square hot meals for us a day. And the entire crew of porters worked together like a well oiled machine to ensure we were well fed and supported each step of the way; flawlessly breaking down camp and then running ahead of us to set up so that everything was pretty much ready for us whenever we got to the next stop. Brayson the steward greeted us with coffee and a smile in our tents every morning and brought us all our meals and water in the mess tent, Joel 2 kept our toilet tent squeaky clean, Benson accompanied us to the summit, and so on so forth. All 3 of us were able to summit safely thanks to the tireless efforts of Joel, Hiari and the rest of the African Scenic Safaris team.
Safari Extension: Following the climb, 2 of us stayed on in Tanzania for 5 days of safaris in Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire. We flew from Arusha to Serengeti and were picked up by our driver and safari guide, Emanuel, in a well equipped v8 4x4 with a pop top and air-conditioning. The car had a fridge, a power strip for charging cameras and phones, a bin, and well placed pockets and cup holders all throughout. Also a large filtered water system so we were never without drinking water! Emanuel gifted us each our own reusable, safari animal patterned African Scenic Safaris water bottle, which we really appreciated because we are anti single use water bottles. Also because we had been wanting to buy African Scenic Safaris merch after our climb :) For the next 5 days, Emanuel escorted us around from park to park, regaling us with the history of each, as well as detailed information about the dozens of animals we saw. Because of his amazing instincts and experience, we were able to see a wildebeest crossing from start to finish, all of the big 5, and all of the ugly 5!!!!! Tbh I had been to Tanzania once before and hated it because I was only in Zanzibar, which feels like a tourist trap through and through even when staying at a 5-star hotel like the Park Hyatt. My 5 days with Emanuel helped change my negative perception of the country; his love of and pride in Tanzania shows through in everything he does and is truly infectious. I have also previously done safaris in South Africa and Uganda and while I saw plenty of animals up close on those safaris, the guides did not come close to Emanuel's storytelling and explication. Rather, they just took us from point to point in perfunctory fashion, saying next to nothing beyond, "here is a lion."
TLDR: Book with African Scenic Safaris! You won't regret it. I'm already planning on returning to Tanzania to do a different climb and safari through them.
