WWII Memorial to the Bloodiest of the D-Day Landing Beaches

点评：Eye-catching and shimmering, this shiny steel sculpture sits right on the sand in the centre of Omaha Beach.
Omaha was the bloodiest of the five D-Day landing beaches, with the largest number of casualties, with 2,400 casualties in one single day.
The sculpture commemorates this sacrifice and honours the spirit and courage of the men who landed here.
What you see here is a very modern, abstract piece with sail-like wings that rise up out of the sand. It’s meaning was not immediately clear but we realised later that there is an information panel back up on the promenade which explains the symbolism.
According to the sculptor, there are 3 elements based on the ideas of hope, fraternity, and freedom:
’The Wings of Hope’ capture the spirit of those who fought on D-Day and continues to inspire, reminding us that together it is always possible to change the future
‘The Wings of Fraternity’ represent the brotherhood of those who fought and died and reminds us of our responsibility towards others
iii) ‘Rise, Freedom!’ As represented by the tall columns, reminds us of the example of those who rose against barbarity as well as calling us to stand strong against inhumanity
It really is a stunning looking monument and we spent some time walking around it and watching it catch the late afternoon light at different angles.
It is worth noting that visitors are asked to keep some distance from the monument. Disappointingly many people were ignoring this including one group who set up their towels right next to it.
TIP FOR DRIVERS:
Parking around the central part of Omaha Beach was fairly tight as it was quite crowded. We eventually found a single free spot a little further down on the roadside.
