点评:Located on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France, the sculpture has 17 vertical steel columns separated into three parts: The Wings of Hope, Rise, Freedom! and the Wings of Fraternity. This stainless steel sculpture is called “Les Braves” and is located below the “Signal Monument” directly on the sand of Omaha Beach in Normandy, France was designed by French sculptress Anilore Banon. The first symbolizes the spirit of the soldier, the second honors those who fought against oppression, and the third symbolizes unity and shared responsibility. Hope to remind us that together makes it possible to change the future. Freedom serves as a reminder to remain strong against forms of inhumanity and barbarity. Lastly, fraternity is to remind us of our responsibility towards others and ourselves. It honors the courage and sacrifices made on D-Day.
It was unveiled for the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings and is a tribute to the Allied soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today. The first wave of troops who landed waded through the water, sand and mines under gunfire and watched as their fellow soldiers were killed. More than 1,300 Americans and 950 military from Europe and Canada took part in the invasion.
Banon recreated the sculpture known as “Les Braves II: At Waters Edge” on Lake St. Clair in Grosse Point. The one on American soil symbolically connects the two nations who fought and died together in World War II. Les Braves was installed on Omaha Beach one day before the 60th anniversary of D-Day.
