点评:I have written a complaint to Shrewsbury Prison and despite my visit being in April (I emailed immediately after my visit) they have failed to follow this up in a timely fashion. I have tried to deal with this privately multiple occasions and due to a lack of response I am leaving this review, which is largely what I shared with them directly already and will also be escalating the matter further if I do not hear back from them within 2 weeks. My initial chasing earlier in the year was responded to with an acknowledgement and they would get back to me (but haven't), so I know that they have received my communications.
My feedback was around several concerns following my recent overnight stay at Shrewsbury Prison.
While I appreciated the opportunity to take part in this unique experience and had prepared for the cold (as advised), the primary issues were not related to temperature, but to the condition of the accommodation. I encountered damp smells, visible mould, and flaking paint in the sleeping area. I was up all night coughing and left the event feeling physically unwell, despite arriving in good health with no existing issues.
There were also significant issues with guest behaviour. Several individuals were disruptive throughout the night in ways that, according to the stated rules, should have resulted in them being asked to leave — but no action was taken. This contributed to an atmosphere that felt chaotic and poorly managed. These concerns were shared by all members of my group, who also felt that the handling of the situation fell short of what we were led to expect.
Additionally, I witnessed staff pouring someone’s wine back into their bottle and allowing them to take it out of the restaurant, which I believe breaches licensing laws and raises concerns around responsible alcohol handling.
I also want to raise that pre-event communication was inconsistent and unclear. Information was sent out in a scattergun way across multiple emails, rather than one clear summary. This made planning more difficult than it needed to be, especially for someone who benefits from structure and predictability. Again, this was something that my group all noticed and commented on in the lead-up to the event. It was also noted that we were not pre warned about not having access to safely lock away any personal belongings in pre - event emails.
On the night, I also observed unprofessional staff conduct. One member of staff openly made a side remark about it being a “long night,” which didn’t create a welcoming atmosphere. Another staff member told me they had only received an hour of training to work on the till, which showed — they were unable to provide me with an accurate itemised receipt and had to improvise. This added to the general sense of disorganisation.
In terms of safety, there was no prior warning that we would be expected to sleep in cells with lockable doors from the outside. This created considerable anxiety among my group, especially given the lack of supervision and the fact that we were on the top floor, out of the way, without a clear way to contact staff. With the rules not being enforced and guests behaving inappropriately, we had genuine concerns that someone could have attempted to prank or trap us by locking us in. The safety briefing also failed to make clear where staff would be based overnight or how to get assistance in an emergency, like if we had been locked in the cell against our will. This was deeply unsettling and felt like a serious oversight in terms of guest welfare and also presents as a significant fire hazard too.
I also sent across several photos taken during the stay which show the flaking paint, water damage, and visible signs of damp in the room. One of the photos clearly shows visible black mould above my bed, which I was sleeping directly beneath as I was top bunk. This raises serious concerns about air quality and the potential for health risks. While I understand the venue is historic, I believe these conditions fall below an acceptable standard for overnight accommodation and contribute to the health impact I experienced.
Altogether, these issues left me feeling let down, unwell, and unfairly treated, and the experience did not match expectations. Most of the issues I’ve raised were noticed and felt by all members of my group, and we’ve all come away with the same sense of disappointment. I understand the challenges of running events in a historic site, but I feel more care needs to be taken to ensure safety, accessibility, professional standards, clear communication, and fair rule enforcement.
Given the impact this had on my health, comfort, and overall experience for all members of my group I asked them to review the situation and offer appropriate compensation for myself and the other affected members of my group.
If any staff see this review I would appreciate a response within two weeks or I will be escalating this matter further. Date review left : Tuesday 8th July (I sent a follow up email a week before leaving this review to give ample opportunity to get back to me).
