点评:St. Johns church in Freibourg is an imposing building whose construction came to an end not long before the conclusion of the nineteenth century. It was built in neoromanesque style under Joseph Durm's design. It' a rather wide and tall edifice with two four storey bell towers, which in turn are topped by a high steeple on each one of them which make them eye catching from many points of the city. Red sandstone was used for building the church concerned. That colour gives the facade a nice and not at all striking appearance. At the front façade there is the main entrance whose shape is that of a half octagon apse It's flanked by the two aforesaid towers. It gives a very good impression when looked at from the other side of the road in front of the said main entrance.
It's a three nave church, though the central nave is more than twice as wide as the side aisles. Besides, there are galleries over the side aisles, something which isn't very common in catholic churches. The romanesque style is quite apparent also when one has the chance to have entered the temple, since all the arches, both those on the groundfloor between the columns and the smaller ones on the gallery balustrade are semicircular ones. The vault on the nave is a cross ribbed one. Therefore, it's perhaps one of the few elements which are not purely romanesque, inasmuch as that kind of vault is typical of the gothic style. The stain-glass windows are very beautiful. They are the work of the Friburg artist Fritz Geiges. The high altar is likewise beautiful.
Fortunately enough, the church was not damaged during the Second World War, so that the building is preserved in its original state, subject to some repairs which have been carried out, particularly in the towers steeples, owing to some small damages caused by storms and other natural phenomena. It's worth visiting that church so as to contemplate the attractive features inside and admire the greatness of its architectural achievement.
