点评:I've heard great things about this less-visited primate forest so was excited that I finally had the chance to experience it for myself.
I've seen and heard the chimps many times (I live on the edge of Kibale Forest) so what interested me most was the overall experience at Kalinzu. Our guide Deborah was very good. She listened out for birds, pointed out trees, fungus, all kinds of living things. She interpreted what we heard and saw. She really looked after us, as did our young female porter.
Our group of three visitors spent an hour with the chimpanzees. They were high up in the trees but we had good sightings.
I work with a lot of tour operators and lodges and many of them recommend Kalinzu. It is a short drive from Queen Elizabeth National Park, but is far cheaper (currently a very low $40) than Kyambura Gorge, for example. The gorge has a much smaller population of chimps; they move up and down the gorge looking for food so at certain times of the year they are several kilometres away. By contrast, the bigger habituated chimp population of Kalinzu is easier to locate, throughout the year.
My only disappointment with Kalinzu [hence my giving 4 stars not 5] was that we were not sensitised about disease transfer. We should all have been wearing masks in the forest. Transfer of human disease such as cough / cold / flu / COVID can decimate great apes. If you track chimps (or gorillas) elsewhere in East Africa, you will be expected to wear a mask. My advice: take a mask and wear it.
