点评:Climbing the bell tower is one of the best things to do in St Emilion.
Built around 1230, the tower belongs to the monolithic church below and took 400 years to complete.
You can climb to right to the top but it’s not for the faint-hearted. At 68 metres tall, with 196 very steep stairs, it requires commitment.
However this is the highest vantage point in the area. Once you get to the very top, you have 360 degree views of the village and the surrounding countryside. From here you can see the miles and miles of vineyards for which the region is famous.
If you are at all claustrophobic then this is not for you because the winding staircase is very narrow and the space feels very confined. Those with dodgy knees should also avoid it as the stairs are steep and its an unforgiving climb.
Its worth noting that even the viewing platforms are a little scary - they are just so high up and they are not large.
The tower is locked and unmanned so to visit, you need to go across the square to the tourist office where the key is kept. Take you passport or an ID card because you’ll need to leave this with them while you borrow the key.
They also gave us a laminated information sheet in English which was very helpful.
You may have to be patient and wait for a while because they limit access to the tower (there's very little room for passing on the staircase so they have to limit it). If you only have a day here, I’d recommend popping into the tourist office earlier in the day rather than leaving it to the last minute.
