点评:Spied the monument from far away as it’s on the peak of Easby Moor, which stands 324 ft above sea level. Parked no problem at the free Gribdale Gate carpark, and set off from there. It is a steady steep incline up to the monument , but not unduly strenuous. Lots of beautiful nature to admire en-route. There’s forestry part of the way, wild flowers and lots of turfy heather at the top - all accompanied by melodious birdsong. Seems to be a popular place for dog-walkers, and delighted to spy adorable ferrets out for a walk with their owner. The 60 ft high monument in memory of Captain James Cook, was erected in 1827, by Robert Campion, who was a Whitby banker - and is an impressive obelisk. The views from the plateau are wonderful. Even with the temperamental weather we had , you can still see for miles around. There are other trails leading off down the hillside - but reckon probably for more experienced rovers. Would love to come back on a clear & sunny day with a picnic.
