点评:Having visited Lindisfarne we decided to seek out St Cuthbert’s Cave to complete our “pilgrimage” however our reliance on sat nav for this purpose was a disappointment.
We were led down a single track road towards Swinhoe and, whilst awaiting for a flock of sheep to be moved along the road, we asked the farmer if we were heading in the right direction. He confirmed we could be but it depended upon how long a walk we were looking for? He pointed out a clump of trees in the distance as the area the cave was located and suggested it was quite a hike. We took his advice and turned the car around and then attempted to follow his directions. This involved a large circuit back up the A1 to near Fenwick, heading then towards Lowick and turning off at Holburn before reaching the latter. Needless to say we got it wrong and detoured until we saw signs for towns at the Scottish Border! Backtracking we found the small road sign for Holburn, but still no signpost for St Cuthbert’s Cave. We don’t think one exists.
Fortunately sat nav “recalculated” and we eventually wound our way through the rural scenic landscape to the National Trust car park at Holburn Grange. It’s hidden behind some cottages for good measure.
We headed on foot, uphill on a track and took a right at a T-junction and eventually came to some woods. Through the gate here, about halfway along there was a gap in the trees on the left which led uphill to the cave. (We subsequently discovered that heading up the path to the left of the gate would have also led to the cave).
The cave is broad but not deep however it is easy to imagine that those monks carrying the remains of St Cuthbert could well have rested or sheltered here for some time whilst “touring” the north of England for seven years. (They possibly had trouble with sat nav too). It is of course all according to legend but in seeking out this place we did tour some nice countryside we wouldn’t have necessarily seen otherwise.
We extended the walk by continuing uphill beyond the caves and after following some rough tracks reached a rocky outcrop and cairn with 360° views of the surrounding area - worth the effort in our view. We didn’t attempt the circuit mentioned by others on TA, but instead headed back roughly the route we had come.
Overall we eventually enjoyed the walk although would recommend to others to be clear of their directions for finding the car park at the outset.
Take some water/refreshments especially if it is warm.
