点评:Why only 2 stars? The interpretive placards in the galleries. It felt like half of the permanent exhibits were described with depressing statements on the ills of history, and little else. Opportunities to discuss the various schools of art, brushwork, the history of the sitter, the artist's contemporaries, materials used... generally overlooked to cram in another statement about the evils of the past. It felt like I wore a hairshirt going through many of the galleries. If you're hanging a John Singer Sargent and a Maxfield Parrish, mixed among other works with no signage, you're missing opportunities to educate viewers about the commodification of art, ties to advertising, and scandalous histories. And stating a still-life of bananas is nostalgic for a time that never was is just... odd. Obviously, I'm disappointed. The grounds are beautiful, the building is amazing, and there is excellent art throughout. To the curators - if you want to educate your guests, young and old, then do it - on a wide variety of topics that will engage and sometimes even elevate.
