“We, too, born to freedom…”
The National Guard Monument的点评
点评:This is the largest and most obvious of a group of WWII memorials that are clustered at the Pointe-du-Hoc end of Omaha Beach.
Unlike the others, this is not exclusively related to WWII. It represents the volunteer civilian soldiers who made up the US National Guard and fought in Europe in both WWI and WWII.
What you find here is a substantial and solid looking U-shaped structure. It sits on top of a WWII German bunker which housed the fearsome 88 mm cannon (a lethally accurate anti-aircraft and tank gun). It marks the spot where the 29th National Guard Division managed to break through German defences on D-Day, on the 6th June, 1944.
On each of the inner three walls, there are inscriptions that describe the role played by the National Guard in the both WWI and WWII. These are easily read because you can walk inside the U-shape.
It’s harder to read the inscriptions on the outer walls. Each of the outer walls carries an inspiring quote from one of the three major Allied leaders - Roosevelt, Churchill and Charles de Gaulle.
The quote from US leader, Roosevelt reads, “We, too, born to freedom, and believing in freedom, are willing to fight to maintain freedom. We and all others who believe as deeply as we do, would rather die on our feet than live on our knees.”
To get a better understanding of what the soldiers faced when they landed here on D-Day, we climbed the steep slope just past the National Guard monument, up towards the camping site. Halfway up, a German bunker is set into the hillside and from the very top, we could look back down over the beach. It was a shock to see just how terribly exposed they were when they landed on the beachfront.
