点评:We walked the section of the Saxon Shore way from Lower Upnor to the aptly named Hoo Sailing Barge Graveyard whilst on a circular walk out and back from Upnor village. We started our walk on a Sunday morning from the (free) car park at the top of Upnor High Street and joined the Saxon Shoreway at Lower Upnor.
#The walk takes the visitor along the north bank of the River Medway and along stretches of rough and uneven shingle on the riverbank so wear some suitable footwear and also check the tide times if you don't want to get wet feet. Note that the walk has no public toilets but there are commercial premises where it is possible to but refreshments in both Lower Upnor and Hoo Marina.
Leaving the picturesque Lower Upnor promenade. behind, the walk passes a figurehead for the Arethusa sailing ship which was once moored here.
Passing a small marina the walk leaves the paved area and moves onto the beach where it is possible to get good views across the River to St. Marys Island.
A second World war pillbox may be found on the shore tilting forwards and the soil underneath has been washed away by years of tides. Inside can be disorientating due to the sloping floor but is relatively well preserved though there is an accumulation of rubbish growing by the year.
Continuing along the shore the walker next comes across the red brick remains of Cookham Wood Fort, built in 1669 after the Dutch raid on Chatham Dockyard in 1667. Unfortunately, there is no information here for the casual visitor but the weathered brickwork does give some good photographic possibilities.
Continuing on the walk once more reaches more level ground at Port St Werburgh and here you will find an eclectic collection of house boats and other river craft.
The footpath is fairly well signposted as it threads its way beside and then through the boatyards and at one stage is in a fenced off cordon between industrial units and private boatyards, re emerging once more onto the river at Stargate Marina.
We continued a short way further to the Hoo Sailing Barge Graveyard. Here you will find a sad collection barges and other river craft in varying stages of decay, on the day of our visit sitting in the mud at low tide.
From this point the path way continues towards the Kingsnorth Power station but we turned back to return to Upnor village vis a very nice café near to Hoo Marina for a cup of tea.
Not the most scenic of walks but the are points of interest and also photographic opportunities along the way. Probably better to undertake in the summer months when there will be more traffic on the river and wildlife to spot.
