The remains of Roman occupation and settlement. If only you could see it.
Silchester Roman City Walls and Amphitheatre的点评
点评:This is great walk along the old walls of the Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum, which was built on the site of the original Iron age settlement of the Atrebates tribe.
The remnants of the stone wall which surrounded the town must be some of the beat preserved in Britain, certainly better than many other Roman settlements we have seen in Wales.
Excavation shave over a number of years have shown this to be one of the best preserved Roman towns, with laid out streets and numerous public buildings. It was one of the last Roman towns to be abandoned after the Anglo-Saxon invasion and did not survive in medieval Britain.
It is such a pity that all the excavations of the town have been reburied "for the future". Why not erect some covering over areas of historical importance so that you can get a view of the town as has been done elsewhere in the world. This would be far better than the information plaques along the walk. Having said that they do give a lot of information, but little perspective of how the town looked in the flesh.
The only remain building is the ruins of amphitheatre.
Although there is no entrance fee, I would still rather have paid to see the excavated town as that is history.
Definitely a place to visit if you are interested in the ancient history of Britain.
