The new Funny Bone Omaha is absolutely incredible. The new room is a huge upgrade. The seating is comfortable, the sightlines are excellent, and it’s a fantastic place to see a comedy show. We’ll definitely be back.
The only thing that left a bad taste in our mouths was the automatic 18% “gratuity.” When the waitress handed me the handheld payment device, the gratuity was already filled in. I didn’t notice it until I was about to pay. When I pointed it out, she directed me to tiny print on the drink side of the menu. Since we don’t drink, there was no reason for us to be looking there, making the disclosure anything but obvious.
Unfortunately, this is a textbook example of deceptive pricing and unnecessary pricing games. The menu advertises one price, but customers are ultimately required to pay another because a mandatory fee is added after they’ve already decided to buy. That’s the very definition of drip pricing—advertising one price to influence a customer’s buying decision, then increasing the price through mandatory fees added after the customer has already committed to the purchase. Calling a mandatory fee a “gratuity” doesn’t change what it is. If every customer is required to pay it, it’s simply part of the price—and it should be included in the menu price from the beginning.
The environment is almost perfectly designed for this type of hidden fee. During a comedy show, nobody is going to risk interrupting the performance, question staff, or create a scene over an unexpected hidden fee. Most people will simply pay it without question because they’re there to enjoy the show—not debate an unexpected charge. Hidden fees work because customers don’t discover them until they’re already committed. Customers shouldn’t have to search for fine print or discover mandatory fees only when they’re ready to pay. The price you advertise on the menu should be the price you charge when the check comes.
With menu prices already being on the high side, there is absolutely no reason to play pricing games. Stop trying to hide a mandatory fee behind the word “gratuity” and simply include it in your menu prices. If every customer is expected to pay it, then it’s part of the price. Advertise the full price up front instead of using deceptive drip pricing to make the menu appear less expensive than it really is. Businesses shouldn’t have to rely on pricing games to make their prices look more attractive and force customers to do math just to know what it really costs in the end.
As for the food, the Big House Chicken Salad was good, although it’s pretty hard to mess up a chicken salad. The Asian Chicken Sandwich was disappointing. It was bland, lacked flavour, and was so messy that it wasn’t enjoyable to eat. Next time, we’ll probably eat somewhere else beforehand and come just for the show.
Overall, this is an outstanding venue with a beautiful new room, and we’ll absolutely be back. I just hope management stops the pricing games, eliminates the hidden mandatory fee, and simply advertises the price they actually expect every customer to pay. Transparent pricing would make an already great experience even better.
