Sheep Mountain Table Road的点评
点评：First, a bit of clarification about the “high clearance” access road: the first few miles, up to the main overlook are NOT a difficult, rugged road, just a basic, well-graded gravel road. You might not want to do it in a Corvette, but a Corolla will be fine.
And the views at that overlook are stupefying, perhaps better than in the crowded North Unit. Not as much color to the Badlands formations, but very intricate and cliffy, stretching for miles into the distance. Honestly, you don’t need to go further to make the trip worthwhile. And it’s very quiet: even on a Saturday evening in June, there were only another car or two there.
Beyond that, the road DOES become difficult and high clearance. I would not recommend it in a family Subaru or Honda Pilot unless you are a skilled off road driver, but a Jeep or 4x4 pickup should be fine. The views do get even more staggering if you drive those last 2-3 additional miles, but it’s even better to walk (or bike, as I did) because you’ll need to get out of your vehicle many times to capture the views.
A highly recommended experience, as long as you don’t mind a few miles of easy (at least on a dry summer day) gravel. I had an encounter with a pronghorn antelope and a very close (less than 20 yards) encounter with a bighorn sheep, within 5 minutes of each other.
