Visit before your journey to the island, not at the end!
Museo de Las Iglesias de Chiloe的点评
点评:According to my guide there are three main reasons why tourists come to Chiloe: penguins, UNESCO churches, and the countryside. I took a raincheck on the first while focusing on the second and incidentally experiencing the third on the way. We were fortunate enough to see fourteen of the sixteen churches during my three days on the island. These structures ranged from the Neo-Gothic Church of San Francisco in Castro to the remote Church of Detif on the islet of Lemuy. A dedicated museum to the traditions behind the genesis of these is found in Ancud.
The museum was closed on my first day on the island, so I stopped with my guide just before departing via the Chacao ferry. Located in a single room, the museum contains numerous small models of the churches on the island in addition to posters and drawings describing the architectural specifics behind many of the structures. Additionally, there are close-ups of wood showing the methods of carpentry used for the buildings as well as miniature figurines of the statues used in the churches. There was a fairly complete gift shop adjoining the main room. Due to time constraints and the fact that we had seen many of these buildings in person we left after less than an hour.
Overall, this museum would have made more of an impact if we saw it at the beginning of our journey. The models were interesting enough, but after traveling the countryside and especially after seeing the interiors of the churches in Nercon (see separate review) and Ischuac the material presented here was a bit redundant. Also, there is very little information in English but I was a bit more forgiving about this due to its remote location.
My recommendation would be to visit before you begin your sojourn to the countryside if you have the time and means.
