点评:Albeit by no means an oldest wooden bridge, nevertheless it’s impressive and well worth seeing.
Alighting at Au from the Sargans bus it was a pleasant walk in the sunshine to the Rhine. It was nice to pass green fields with mountain background and see livestock relaxing.
At 135m in length the bridge has a fine profile across the river, which incidentally wasn’t at its mighty apogee.
It was great to walk along the bridge, noting and admiring its wooden lattice structure. This is per the Howe system that comprises wooden diagonal compression beams combined with vertical metal supports.
It opened in 1901 replacing a predecessor and catered for motorised and pedestrian flows. In 1975 a new concrete bridge opened a short distance to the south.
Since then the olden one is for people only. Making for a relaxing traverse.
