点评:This was my second visit to Karen people. First time, 7 years ago in 2018, I was at the source, in Kayah State in Myanmar, which borders Thailand west from Chiang Mai.
This time, I included this village on our 2 weeks Thailand tour.
These are the same people who fled Kayah state and the Myanmar oppression to settle themselves in a more friendly and peaceful, yet still restrictive environment. There are several such villages all over northwestern Thailand, whose government gave them shelter, but almost any rights. They have no right for employment, no right for citizenship.
In that way, the only income for their survival is that 300 Baht (9 $) entry fee, and money earned from selling their hand made goods - souvenirs, jewelry, clothes,...
And as I see here, those 9$ seem being a big problem for many - a price of a beer or glass of wine in any EU/US better bar.
This Karen village is around half an hour drive north from Chiang Rai. It's set in the countryside, off the main road. It consists of two main streets - one longer, another shorter. Both streets (unpaved) consist of many stalls selling clothes, jewelry, ethnic symbols,....
You'll see them (all women, men are out in the fields) working, some feeding and playing with their babies or kids. All were very kind, greeting you and no one, I mean really no one was pushy to force you buy something - so common thing in any Thai night market or Phuket beach.
We spent two hours there, having great time and supporting them buying few items. You can freely photograph them, however it's polite to ask and no one refused.
