A Good Guide Makes All the Difference

点评：Like most travelers, we came here to see the butterflies and they were breathtaking! The parks are relatively easy to get to, and you do get a mandatory park guide that tags along within the park. However, we learned there are many factors that can increase your chances of having a magical experience BEFORE you even get to a park. Time of year, time of day, temperature, cloud cover, and rain can all determine whether you see thousands of butterflies dancing in the air above you or not. As you're in the mountains, conditions can change quickly. There are a few parks in the area, and while some of their peaks may be fully shrouded in clouds and even raining, others may be your ticket to an unforgettable experience. That's why I highly recommend getting a good local guide who knows the area and can increase your chances of seeing tons of butterflies, especially if you're tight on time like we were.
We were lucky enough to find Oscar as others have in previous reviews. Oscar Reyes is a local in Angangueo who is also a guide and speaks excellent English. He's truly a local and gets his business through word of mouth and referrals. Oscar was kind enough to drive the 4-5 hours to Mexico City to pick us up and drove us back once we finished our stay. I can't praise him enough for how much he elevated our experience. We call him the butterfly whisperer. He glanced at the peaks and knew which park might give a better show. Sure enough, in talking to other guests at our accommodation, he was right on more than one occasion. When it rained, he took us to town, nearby ruins, recommended good places to eat, and suggested other interesting places that are worth seeing/experiencing that only a local would know. You get a truly authentic local experience with Oscar, tailored to your wants if you so choose.
To reward his excellent service to us, I am more than happy to continue to refer him to others interested in seeing the butterflies or the area. He doesn't have a website at the time of writing this review, so I reached out to him via WhatsApp as others have, and I recommend you do as well.

All those considerations mentioned above, such as how's the weather, how are the butterflies right now, when should I come, etc., he can answer better than most. I suggest you have a chat with him first before committing to any concrete plans, as there isn't a whole lot he can do if you show up in unfavorable conditions as we did. He still managed to make magic happen by knowing when and where to take us, and we are truly grateful.
