点评:On another annual antiques 3-day buying trip away from Hampshire up to Lincolnshire in my post-media career, I had a recommendation that dropping by Sawbridgeworth on the Hertfordshire & Essex border on the return leg home would be a good idea..!
So on a rather cold, late November morning, my pal and I rocked up to this amazing Antiques Centre, residing, (so it appeared to my eyes), in an old railway siding..with 3 or 4 other similar businesses stretched out alongside, all in some very interesting old multi-floor barn-type railway-looking architecture.
Pulling into the long & narrow car-park alongside a main railway line, my eyes were actually first drawn up to an absolutely huge & very impressive tall building on the other side of the line which, for all the world, looked like some massive Austrian Castle-fortress from the late 1700's looming over the scene..but was in fact, an old brewery I was later told.
(Memo to self..look up its history at some point!).
Once parked up, we entered the Herts & Essex Centre, the building nearest the main road.and oh boy, what a higgeldy-piggeldy maze of antiques & collectible dealer-cases stretched out over many floors.
So after a warm welcome from the staff located just inside the front door, we immediately began investigating this huge old building: up & down stairs, around hidden corners, finding all sorts of lovely artefacts, (though sadly not a lot of militaria, which is my own particular bag), but certainly an amazing cross-section of interesting bits & bobs to suit most collector's interests and indeed budgets,.
Happily I did eventually track down a couple of pieces for myself and was served by a very friendly lady who made the transactions all the more fun and so my first visit to this intriguing Centre was more than worthwhile... and all rounded off with a superb cup of coffee in the wee cafe at the very top of this historic old building..a gorgeous hot & creamy cappuccino, just the job on a bone-numbingly cold morning!
So all in all, a smashing place to visit on a cold winter's day and I very much look forward to visiting Sawbridgeworth again in the Summer..the normal period for our annual 'northern' antiques road trip. 👍
