点评:Three buildings on the eastside of Grote Markt form Mechelen city hall.
The beautifully decorated neogothic building on the left corner was intended to house the "Grote Raad" (Big Council), the highest judicial body in the Burgundian Netherlands, but the plan never materialized. Construction started early 1500s (architect Rombout II Keldermans), but came to a halt only to be resumed 400 years later.
The 14th century Belfort structure in the middle was never completed (tower is missing), though enlarged and embellished in later years. It is recognized by UNESCO as world heritage. The cloth hall on the right corner is basically a commercial building dating from the same period as the Belfort.
Stylewise the structures do not really fit together very well. The modern sections at the rear I found rather disappointing. Still, when visualized separately the front buildings are fantastic.
