Birding beyond flamingos? Stay overnight in Celestun!

点评：Celestun was a very sweet beachside town. We took the bus from Merida and stayed in an Airbnb that was a cabana of hotel Manglares. We could easily walk to the center square but had a nice quiet stay at that end of the beach. We stayed one night so we could wake up early and go birding with David Bacab. He owns a small cafe off of the main square with vegetarian food, speaks good English and is passionate about birding and nature. He was a fantastic tour guide and we saw tons of birds -water birds, birds in the mangroves and birds endemic to the drier sandy flats. He also was teaching a couple other younger men to give birding tours and he was clearly a very good teacher and the young men had a great eye for birds. David also gave us a tip to get the flamingo tour from the bridge which was a great experience. They take you on the inner channel which is brackish water and where the flamingos prefer. There are some tours that launch from the beach but this channel accessed from the bridge is apparently the better way to go. It also felt much more organized and regulated instead of being hassled by lots of boatmen on the beach. We were glad to stay the night to make sure we could go on such wonderful birding trips but one thing to note is that the town closes up shop early. Almost all restaurants were closed by 5-6pm which left us piecing together dinner. I think most people come in for the day as many of the restaurants are very tourist focused but I do recommend staying the night. Their economy could use it and it was the best way to go birding and support the people who not only really care about the natural areas but are helping to teach the younger generation to preserve the natural areas that make the town so special. All and all a fantastic stay in Celestun!
