Overnight Nantucket Fluke Trip — Always a Great Time

点评：This was my third Nantucket fluke trip on the Bounty Hunter, and it was a great experience. I’ve also done three of their spring squid trips. One of those squid trips was slow, and most of the boat didn’t do well — but that’s just how fishing goes sometimes. It wasn’t for lack of effort. Sometimes the fish simply aren’t chewing, and that’s part of the sport.
Nantucket fluke trips are overnight runs, leaving around 11pm and returning the next day around 9pm. The ride out was smooth, and by sunrise we were already fishing on the Nantucket grounds.
We had steady action, but like with all fluke fishing, results varied. On my second trip, I didn’t do as well, while the guy next to me (on his first fluke trip) was catching doormats one after another. On this trip too, some people caught more than others. That’s fluke fishing — drift, angle, gulp and bucktail color matters, and a little luck always play a part.
One thing I really appreciate is that the boat doesn’t overload passengers. There’s plenty of space at the rail and far fewer tangles, which makes the trip much more enjoyable. On all of my trips, the heaviest sinker I’ve needed has been 10oz, and I fish 20 lb braid with a simple hi/low rig, which stays comfortable for long sessions.
The mates who work these overnight trips are the best in the business. They’re attentive, friendly, and right there when you need them. Their attitude and work ethic are a big reason I keep coming back.
For comparison, the Helen H is another great boat, but they often fish deeper offshore water, where you may need 18oz sinkers or heavier, along with heavier gear overall. If you prefer a lighter-tackle feel and more space at the rail, the Bounty Hunter is a great fit.
Small tip: If you end up sleeping outside on a beanbag during the ride out, bring a waterproof/resistant sleeping bag — you might catch a little spray.
