点评：I can't review Raul of Mango's Adventures highly enough. If you want a guide with extreme knowledge of the local plant and animal life, best local spots for tours and dining, and is a trustworthy and patient guide who will adjust to your group's needs, Raul is it! We visited as a family of 5. I'm currently in active treatment for metastatic breast cancer and Raul got me, and my 3 teen/tween daughters and husband, to the top of the waterfall hike with his knowledge, patience, and care. I don't imagine we would have as much attention from another guide. My husband was skeptical of going to a small tour company based solely on WhatsApp communication and preferred we go through the resort, but his skepticism was restored as soon as he met Raul in Costa Rica near Playa Herradura beach (we stayed in Los Suenos). He was so warm and trustworthy and offered better prices than the resort - an added bonus. And, as you'll see - we had the time of our lives thanks to Raul.
He truly saved our trip after a rough start with some seasickness on a fishing charter we had set up outside of Raul. I had communicated with him before our trip about the catamaran tour to Tortuga island and the waterfall hike - but wanting to avoid another boat, I asked Raul if he had a suggestion. He sent us the monkey house tour info and it was an instant hit with our family. Raul wisely suggested an early start which was brilliant - we arrived at the house having the whole yard to ourselves and got substantial monkey interaction. One of my daughters got a bit frightened at first from the alpha male - but Raul made sure she felt safe! We then stopped at the Crocodile bridge and got some delicious smoothies across the street and some time to souvenir shop. Truly this morning turned our trip around.
Continuing to turn our trip to the positive, the waterfall hike was the PEAK experience of our trip. I truly cannot imagine doing this with another guide. We arrived at a similar time to a much larger group - having a private tour with Raul was so obviously beneficial given the personal attention he could provide. Raul has done it all - he has surf and lifeguard experience so we felt we were in great hands. He pointed out plants like an energy plant, a sleeping plant, and various insects along the way. The first part of the trek involved a fairly steep hike and it was of course quite humid. When one of our group felt a bit overexerted, Raul responded with water, support, and encouragement. He carried a pack with water and fruit. We had our own pack (which ended up not being super necessary) and Raul ended up carrying THAT for us too over more treacherous parts of the climb. Others in our group got nervous when it came time to repel upwards on ropes and rocks and Raul was always there quickly, guiding and encouraging. When it came time to decide whether to go to all 10 - where parts of the hike were increasingly challenging, he gently encouraged us - telling us he knew we could do it. I am so glad he did. We made it all the way - 10 waterfalls, close to 5 miles, and over 1100 feet of elevation gain. I was so proud of my family - and myself - for doing this on active chemotherapy treatment. You truly can't beat the feeling of jumping off a cliff into the cool, clear waterfall pool. It is a family memory we will treasure forever, all thanks to Raul.
I hope to return to Costa Rica and Raul will be my first call.
