点评:Beautiful walk through various habitats. It is eye opening to see the change from forest to marsh to dunes to beach. We did the suggested loop for day trippers. 90% of ferry folks get off at Dungeness Dock. We chose to get off at Sea Camp Dock and walk towards Dungeness using the River Trail. Our family was alone. It was peaceful and immersive. Then we saw our first horse, stomping through the forrest, snatching Spanish Moss out of trees. He didn’t care about us. We had a picnic in an open area with beautiful trees and picnic tables near the Dungeness Dock. The same horse came to that area as well and was eating grass in a meadow. Dungeness itself is impressive and sad. The whole island is a reflective and private place. I’d recommend the little cemetery overlooking the marsh, just to the left of Dungeness and down the road. Robert E. Lee’s father was buried there for 100 years, then his body was moved. A marker remains. Be sure to take a water bottle, sunscreen, bug spray ( we saw 0 bugs other than dragon flies though ), and snacks. I carried a mini bank pack with ice packs. I brought boiled shrimp, trail mix, apples, and pretzels. That was plenty! There are at least 5 sets of bathrooms, beginning at the St. Mary’s ferry dock. There are more at Sea Camp dock, Dungeness dock, Dungeness, and the beach entrance/exit at the Sea Camp cut through. They were all very clean. The marsh and dune boardwalks are amazing. We saw several armadillos and a white horse eating grass far out in the marsh. They go where they want. The 1.5 mile stretch of beach on the loop is exceptional. More horses there! Cold ocean water is the best for sore feet. Chacos are a good choice for a hike like this. Wear a wide brimmed hat. Enjoy one of Georgia’s best treasures! We will return for a beach trip.
